What is the best home audio system I can get for around $300?

I'm looking for a system that can handle low frequency hard kicking b and yet also hit clear mids and highs. Something good for personal audio as well as small party on seldom occasion. I'm not sure if i should go for a home theater system, or a custom audio system with a receiver monitors and a sub. Any ideas???
