Skype says it cannot find my webcam?

I use Skype and from time to time it tells me it cannot find my webcam. My webcam works fine and I have no problem with video calls when I use Messenger. Then, suddenly all seems to be ok and the video call on reappears as if by magic. Would certainly like to know why this is happening.
