I don't understand why Sulphur can accomodate more than 8 electrons.?

The electronic configuration of S is 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p4. I don't see an empty d orbital in Sulphur so how is it that it can have more than 8 electrons in the case of Sulfuric Acid? This is in regards to the lewis structure of that molecule. Any help will be appreciated! Thanks!
